Synopsis:
On the run…
It’s been four months since the head of the Institute of Supernatural Research was murdered. But that doesn’t mean June Coffin is out of hiding yet. In a world where being different can get you killed, it’s best to keep a low profile. Especially for a Siren who can control other people with the call of her voice. That goes double if your powers might be inexplicably growing…

On the hunt…
But June isn’t the only one trying to clear her name. There’s Sam, the charismatic paranormal rights leader, and Micha, the first human on record to go paranormal. All of them must bargain with a mysterious vampire named Occam Reed if they want to stay alive.

Out of time…
As tensions increase between humans and paranormals, June must decide who to trust. If only she could hear the song inside her heart…
~The Love Triangle~
Some readers love them. Some readers hate them. They pop up in romance now and then, but they come along quite often in urban fantasy and YA. Sometimes they turn into something even bigger than a three-sided shape.

I’m talking about the love triangle in fiction.

Usually the love triangle consists of two equally appealing heroes vying for the attention and affection of the heroine. Oftentimes, it’s hard to choose between her two suitors because they both bring something appreciable to the table. Many different outcomes await: she may choose one over the other, one may gracefully bow out (or be forced to), she may choose neither, she may choose someone else, or, my favorite trope, she chooses both.

I love a good love triangle, which is why there’s one in my Siren Song urban fantasy series. In The Bloody City, the second book in the series, this three-way tension becomes much more pronounced. My heroine, June Coffin, is living in a dangerous world where she has to watch her back—and now help her friends prove their innocence after they were forced to commit murder to save themselves. But even during hard times, attraction blooms where it blooms. In June’s case, she’s seeking comfort in an uncertain and tumultuous world. Her paramours are too.

June is torn between two very different men. One is Micha Bellevue, an all-around clean cut good guy with idealistic aspirations. He’s a human without paranormal powers, a ‘normal,’ but he’s deeply entrenched in the paranormal world. Micha is good-hearted with noble intentions, which makes it tragic when the world he once revered hurts him. Micha becomes the unwilling subject of a horrifying experiment that may eventually kill him. June can’t help but have a soft spot for him. While she admires his pragmatic and giving nature, she is also anguished by the victimization that’s turning him into a cynic.

There is also Sam Haain, a fiery and passionate community leader and politician in the paranormal world. Dedicated to his people almost to the point of separatism and fanaticism, Sam reviles Micha, viewing him as an interloper and opportunist. Sam is a little off-the-wall and deeply entrenched in his beliefs. Unsurprisingly, he thinks June can do much better than Micha—namely, himself. June is attracted to him too, as he draws people in and doesn’t apologize for who he is. Also, as she wakes up more and more to a world she once tried to exclude herself from, he’s becoming a guide and a tempting mentor.

Choosing between these two men is never easy, and June does a lot of soul-searching and fretting. Even as I write the fourth book, I’m having a hard time getting her to pick one. June finds it difficult to have a normal relationship, as staying alive is more the order of the day. She also questions whether she would be involved with either of these men if she was living her regular everyday life, or if the bonds are simply formed by hardship.

Some readers want a clear-cut notion of who’s with who in a story, and that’s okay. That’s why a lot of romances focus on a single couple. For myself, I love a good “who will she choose?” type of adventure. The tension it creates is delicious and the suspense is riveting. So, if you’re a fan of the triangle too, my series might just be for you!

The whole thing was like attending one’s own funeral, only slightly less creepy.

Midway through the next speech, movement behind the stage caught June’s attention. A group of people were gathering back there. Her spirits lifted. Maybe the FBI was about to throw down.

“What’s going on back there?” Sam stood on his tiptoes.

“Probably more people who want to talk.” June sighed.

She skimmed the crowd, seeing if anyone looked as bored as she felt. A familiar face popped out for a split second, and she quickly looked back at the spot. She had to be imagining things.

She wasn’t.

Roughly thirty yards away in the tight-packed crowd, a man stood, staring at them. He wore a hoodie despite the heat, the hood pulled up and shielding his face. His eyes were bloodshot and watery.

“Sam.” She scrabbled at his hand. “Someone’s watching us.”

The man moved toward them. The speaker on stage had finished and other people were coming out. Sam was focused there, but he looked at June, and then around.

“Occam,” she whispered. “To the left.”

Occam pushed up next to them and stopped. His eyes were rimmed with red, his skin flushed.

“I know you’re in there,” he taunted.

“What the hell are you doing here?” Sam whispered.

Dread welled in June’s chest. The intensity of Occam’s gaze chilled her to the bone beneath the blazing sun.

The blazing sun. A vampire was out in broad daylight. He didn’t even have the benefit of shade, like at the clinic. Why?

“Get out of here,” Occam said. “Or you are going to die.”
