Soon Police Detective Carla Thurber comes to suspect Ray of killing his wife, and of a subsequent murder of Pam’s confidant. In the greatest challenge of his life, Ray must outrun the police and elude those who are out to kill him as he seeks the truth about his wife’s death.
~What is the Definition of Courage?~
When I created the character Ray Courage I hadn’t really done so with the intention of making him symbolize “courage.” I wanted a strong name that could withstand title repetition in a book series. Now that I’ve completed three books about Ray in the Ray Courage Mystery Series, and with a fourth on the way, it turns out he does represent what courage means.

In creating Ray, I wanted an every day kind of guy that many readers could relate to. He is a middle-aged retired college professor starting a new career as a private investigator with no experience in this new field. In each of the novels he is put into situations in which he has no previous experience against people very unlike him -- murderers, thieves and terrorists. For him to succeed in these situations he must overcome not only these opponents, but also his own fear and self-doubts. Despite these external and internal obstacles Ray persists because he believes in doing what’s necessary to right a wrong or to bring a criminal to justice.

To me that is the definition of courage--doing what one thinks is right, even when it is difficult or even dangerous, when others may doubt you, and you may doubt yourself. As Ray Courage’s character continues to evolve in upcoming books his character--his courage--will continue to be tested and he will evolve as a person from book to book

After she left I took out my phone and opened the email from Pam1111, fully intending to delete it after a quick glance. Instead of some offer for an erection booster or the chance to aid a Nigerian princess, the message gave me an immediate chill:

Ray,
How could you have done that to me 13 years ago? Me, the person you said you loved? Well, it didn’t work. I’m not dead and I am going to make you pay after all these years. Better look over your shoulder.

Pam

~Meet R. Scott Mackey!~
Scott Mackey lives in Northern California, where he writes both fiction and non-fiction. His first book, Barbary Baseball, achieved critical acclaim from baseball historians for its quality research and writing. He followed that with two young adult novels. His popular Ray Courage Mystery Series includes Courage Begins, Courage Matters, and Courage Resurrected. The fourth book in the series, Courage Lies Beneath, is scheduled for release later in 2015.

Scott's career arc has included stints as a corporate communications manager, college professor, copywriter, bartender, and youth sports coach. In addition to obsessing over punctuation and grammar, he cares about his family (including his dog and cat), the San Francisco Giants, and his rather sad golf game.

R. Scott Mackey will be awarding a $50 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour.

Thanks for the comment. If you want to sample the Ray Courage Series for free, I encourage you to download a copy of the first book, Courage Begins, which is a novella length book that can introduce you to the characters and my writing style. You can access that at http://amzn.to/1M7XUEA

  4. There is a lot to comment on, but I'll limit myself to this phrase: "... In addition to obsessing over punctuation and grammar...." I feel the exact same way. I wish more (and more and more) people felt the same way. It is a dying art....

  5. Do you have any strange writing habits (like standing on your head or writing in the shower)?

  7. Mai, I'm afraid I am unable to write while standing on my head and my laptop wouldn't be able to withstand a shower. I do, however, write standing up for the most part. I have an adjustable-height desk that I usually leave at standing height. It also keeps the cat from walking across my keyboard (she's not a good jumper).
