Some people think Ellen Hamilton, the business savvy daughter of the largest employer in town, is too big for her britches. After all it’s the 1950s and women have no place running factories. But when the Hamilton company is threatened with takeover by John Adair, the man who broke her heart and was run out of town years ago, the game is on. Has Ellen met her match? Or, will this time be different and will Ellen win everything—including the handsome and mysterious John.

John examined her expression much too closely when he said,
“You’re up to something, aren’t you?”
Ellen looked away. How did he know? No one knew.
He laughed. “You have your own plan. I should’ve guessed.”
“I don’t.” Her voice lifted in pitch.
Not taking his eyes off her, he said, “Yeah, you do. I know
you.”
“No, you don’t.”
He smiled at her.
Damn, he did. Just as it had been so many years ago, when it
seemed their dreams traveled side-by-side along a silent highway, she knew he
could still read her way too well.
It was disconcerting. And yet…
She moved into his embrace. Her lips eagerly found his and
she felt herself melt.
He swept her up into his arms and off the ground.
A laugh, a yelp of joy escaped from her lips as John carried
her under the canopy and laid her down on a bed of leaves.
Needing to feel his skin against hers, she wriggled her arms
free from her blouse, undid her bra and tossed the garment as if she were
throwing off unseen chains that had kept her numb from sensation for far too
long. But not anymore. Awash in desire, she pulled his mouth to hers while she
unbuttoned his shirt. Her hands slipped under his white cotton undershirt,
exploring his abdomen’s knots of sinewy muscle, up to his granite-like chest.
She pulled his shirt off and finally felt the intoxicating pleasure of her
flesh pressing against his.
His hands, electric, stroked her thighs. His tongue teased
and tormented her breasts. Her mind exploded into fragments, but all thoughts
were of him. Of John, the boy who could make her dizzy with a glance. The
friend, sparring and matching her in wit and invention. Now, the man—gentle and
sure. All John, but there was more to him she did not know—a darkness,
something held back, hidden. He repeated her name, and she wanted to understand
every inch of him.
