While she loved Xander, she didn’t have time for a long chat this morning. “I’m not sure Elliot’s death has become real yet. I just put on mascara, so I don’t want to discuss my feelings right now. Would you mind waiting until Thursday?”

“Certainly, we’ll discuss your denial stage then.”

Denial—never a truer word was spoken. Xander always pierced straight to the heart of her emotional state. Maybe she should be grateful for the distraction of flat tires and handsome football players. Denials, distractions—anything to keep from dwelling on the fact her brother was no longer a phone call away.

As she peered through her front window blinds, she dug her front teeth into her bottom lip, making a groove. Don’t cry. She clenched her jaw, breathed deep through her nose, and slowly exhaled. Just get through the next minute, the next hour, and the day will pass.
