Kalin Moshire and his stepbrother Shane, struggle to survive in a hidden society of people known as the Khet. Kalin's family used to be the royal bloodline of the North American khet clans, but after a tragic takeover in which his mother was killed, he has had to live each day hiding and protecting not only himself, but his brother as well, from those that would see them destroyed. They are hunted not only because Kalin is the last of his lineage and therefore the rightful heir to the throne, but also because of his brother, Shane's heritage. Shane is the only living hybrid, a link between the Khet and The normal human's known as Sapes. There are many khet that will stop at nothing to keep their bloodlines "pure." From the cozy suburbs of Montgomery County, Maryland, to the busy streets of New York City, across the desert sands of Egypt, to the rocky cliffs of Ireland - Kalin must unravel the truths that have been hidden to him since childhood and fight for the right to live. Will he be able to fight for a place in khet and sape society, or will bigotry, greed, and hate destroy him.

~~~My Thoughts~~~
The Khet Chronicles: Blood Ties, was an interesting read. It's got the flavor of a good paranormal thriller, but with something else added to it entirely.
I loved the backstory and the worldbuilding that Marcus Twyman incorporated into the book. You really get a sense that this world could exist alongside our own. Kalin and his stepbrother Shane used to be of the royal bloodline, but now the family has been overthrown and the ex-royals have to hide, and fight to stay alive against the usurpers.
One of my absolute favorite things about the story was that there was so much travel involved. Kalin travels all across America, parts of Europe, and even Egypt in order to figure out where he fits in this dynamic and violent world of the khet and sape societies. I really enjoyed the book and am looking forward to see if there's another book in the Khet Chronicles.
I tore my eyes away from my mother, knowing that this would be the last time that I laid eyes on her, and we took off through the lawn, Shane following just a few steps behind me. The barrier followed us as my mother said it would.
With a quick glance over my shoulder I saw my mother glowing a hot white like the sun. Her hair was billowing around her resembling strands of spun rubies and she still levitated. Blood now covered her pale flesh. Her eyes were burning bright and the air around the enemy khet was shimmering with her power. The deadly blue flames still covered the army, burning them to ash where they stood. Some of the enemy had been strong enough to block the attack and they kept lunging for her. She grabbed one by the throat and with a hard shake, she snapped the khet's neck. I looked back towards the dark cover of the woods and cried loudly while I pulled on Shane's little hand, leading him to safety.
Behind us came the sounds of screaming and blood being spilled. Those sounds chased us for a long time as we fled. In fact those sounds would chase me for years to come...like they had tonight.
