“Here’s the latest brief on the CIA’s intelligence on your country. I think you’ll find it particularly interesting that there is still a squadron of nuclear capable US Air Force F-16 jet fighters at Hualien in Taiwan.”

A jolt went through Huang. “Excellent, we have suspected your military did not totally pull out of Taiwan. That is valuable information.” He handed Chapple an envelope containing five thousand dollars in cash.

“Thank you. Are we making any headway on my appointment to Director of the CIA?”

 “We are applying pressure on certain members of congress and the administration. We have to proceed carefully, so it will take a little time, but we will be successful.”

“I know, it’s just that I will be more valuable when I get into that position. There are things that the Director of Operations is doing I’m not privy to.”

Huang’s face tightened. “Yes, Mr. Yates and his subordinate, Mr. Grassley are particularly dangerous. When you are Director, we expect your first act will be to dismiss those two.”

“Don’t worry. I can’t stand them. They act like I’m not even there.”

Huang looked away for a moment and then turned back to Chapple. “Our friends in Iraq want to know what the president might do if they decide to take military action in their region.”

“I’m sure that would depend on what the action would be.”

“Well, see if you can determine the response to different alternatives.”

“I really don’t think this president is as hawkish as his predecessor and probably won’t do anything as long as we are not talking about Saudi Arabia, but I’ll find out.” 

“Good. Well, until next time, James.”

“Uh, well, yes. I’ll see you later.”

As Huang watched Chapple leave, he thought about Yates and Grassley. Those two are indeed dangerous. They are doing things we need to find out about and stop. Especially, if Hussein invades Kuwait. Such a move could cause problems...and opportunities. Now that we have confirmation the US military is still active in Hualien, we can start working toward creating an international incident that will allow us to attack Taiwan.

Huang started his engine and drove out of the campground.

My Thoughts:

Necessary Retributions is the second book in a series about The Guardians, a group of men and women who are mostly ex-cops who make up an elite spy/crime fighting force. They run secret missions and rescues...that whole chestnut. I didn't read the first book in the series, and I still followed the plot and characters really well, which was great. I did like how each mission flowed into the next nicely, like once they would finish one daunting task, another would be there for them to sweep into because of the last mission. 

When it comes to the CIA and spy-ish kind of novels, I'm a bit more into the Covert Affairs kind of model than a more realistic one. This was the kind of macho crime/spy novel that I honestly think would appeal more to men than women. However, it was a pretty interesting read and didn't take me that long to finish so that was good. I loved all the relationships between the characters. Robin's family was especially fun for me. There was lots of danger lurking behind each page and that was definitely fun. 

About the Author!

Mike McNeff is a cop who writes about cops.  He was born in San Angelo, Texas to an U.S. Air Force family.  His early years saw much travel across the U.S. and the Far East.  Mike attended Arizona State University and Arizona State College of Law (now Sandra Day O'Connor Law School).

He began his law enforcement career in 1969 with the Arizona Department of Public Safety.  He also served with the Okanogan County Sheriff’s Department in Washington State. He has worked patrol, criminal intelligence, narcotics, and has been a SWAT team leader and commander as well as a hostage negotiator. Mike has instructed at the Arizona Highway Patrol Academy, Arizona Law Enforcement Training Academy, the DEA Narcotics Commanders’ School and DEA Marijuana Eradication School, the Arizona Law Enforcement Academy, the Chandler/Gilbert Law Enforcement Academy and has lectured in many other law enforcement training venues around the country.  Mike retired from law enforcement in 2009 as a Police Legal Advisor and an officer with the Chandler Police Department in Arizona. 

Mike has also been a Deputy County Attorney for Maricopa County, AZ and the Prosecuting Attorney for Okanogan County, WA.  He is an experienced trial attorney in both criminal and civil cases.  He has successfully defended police officers accused of civil rights violations in federal court.  He is a member of the Arizona State Bar and the Washington State Bar.

Mike started writing after he retired.  Necessary Retribution is his second novel. He is currently finishing a western and working on the third installment of the adventures of the Guardians. Writing has become Mike’s new career.

Mike is married to his wife Linda, has four grown children and seven grandchildren.  He likes to cruise on this boat, fish, crab, bike, play guitar, shoot and of course write.
