Follow Friday

Q. Talk about the book that most changed or influenced your life (was it a book that turned you from an average to avid reader, did it help you deal with a particularly difficult situation, does it bring you comfort every time you read it?).

I hate to be totally unoriginal and pick Harry Potter, but that would probably be mine. I feel like I talk about Harry a little too much though, so I'm going to go with The Giver by Lois Lowry.

I can't even begin to tell you how much of an effect this book had on me. One, it was the first book that really made me think. It wasn't just about plots and settings and characters, it was about ideas.  There were concepts and challenges that I had to use my own brain to figure out. I feel like The Giver was the first book that challenged me intellectually, and was still so fascinating, it could hold the attention of a bunch of 12/13 year olds. Two, it was the first "dystopian" novel that I can think of period. It shows what happens in a world ruled by control, something that I found really compelling in the eighth grade, and still do now (hence my obsession with all things Dystopian/Post-Apocalyptic).
Q. “What is the one ARC you would love to get your hands on right now?” I would have to say either Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins or A Million Suns by Beth Revis. Seriously, Across the Universe and Anna and the French Kiss were two of my FAVORITE books this year and I can't wait to get my hands on the next ones, in ARC form or any other lol. I would take copy-edits right off the press... THAT desperate...

Happy Friday Everyone!!

  1. Totally agree with you. The Giver had such a huge impact on me. If I wasn't already an avid reader, it would have made me into one. =)

  3. Damn...I've never read The Giver, much to my little sister's horror as it's one of her favorite books.

  6. From reading these comments The Giver seems to be a popular book. I'm going to look it up once I post this comment!

I wanted to choose Harry Potter too but felt I alway pick it as my answer to these kind of questions so I went with something different too. The Five People you Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom. It's an amazing book.

  9. @Zillabean Oh I totally get it. I looked at Anna and the French Kiss's cutsey name and cover and most of me was screaming NO NO NO DON"T READ IT YOUR EYEBALLS WILL BURN UP FROM ALL THE CUTE...but luckily a small piece of me still wanted to read it anyways. Believe me, It is SO much better than the title and cover. It is a tad cutesy, but its mostly smart, and sarcastic, and fun. Probably one of the best books of the year. Right up there with Forest of Hands and Teeth and Across the Universe. But it IS a contemp romance...so idk if you'd like it...wow...this is a long comment

  10. Hopping through. I was lucky enough to borrow Lola a few weeks ago and it was wonderful!
The Giver is probably my favorite childhood book. It was one of the first books that really made me think. Did you interpret the ending as happy or sad? I always went for the optimistic view.

  11. Ah...the Giver. To be totally honest, I never read it until I taught it to 7th graders a couple years ago. Totally different perspective, let me tell you! HA. Thanks for stopping by my blog. Following back now!

  13. I'm longing for Lola! Seriously, it cant' arrive fast enough. I'm a major dystopian fan, too. :-)

  14. My favorite dystopian type book was Farenheit 451, a world without books just scared the living daylights out of me!

Never read The Giver, but everyone tells me I must =)
