My Book Boyfriend is a weekly meme hosted by Missie of The Unread Reader. Its a chance to pay homage to the hotties that haunt the pages of the novels we love. The men who stay in our thoughts late at night, who plague us during our long hours at work, who cause us to stare off into the starry night and sigh, because we want them here with us. Yes ladies, its the Book Boyfriend.
Doyle: a.k.a Darkness or The Queen's Darkness
Books: Laurell K. Hamilton's Merry Gentry series
Classification: Fey: Unseelie Sidhe, part Phouka
Description: "It was as if he’d been carved from ebony. All angles and darkness. Then he spoke, with a voice like his skin, so very dark. So dark that as I hear it, my mind runs to molasses and other thick, sweet things; a voice so deep it could hit notes low enough to make my spine shiver...He was an elemental thing carved of darkness and half-light, armed with a killing sword and moving toward me like death incarnate. In that one moment I knew why humans had fallen down to their knees and worshipped us."

Best Quote(perhaps best of all time): "More than life, more than honor, I love thee."
Love is not a strong enough word for what I feel for Doyle. I am infatuated by him, charmed by him, totally 100% devoted to all things Doyle. Of all the characters that hold a piece of my heart, he gets the biggest one. I mean, look at that quote up there! If you haven't read the series, then you might not get the earth shaking gravity of that quote. For Doyle, whose entire existence has been his honor, and he's giving it up for the woman he loves...that my friends, is pure unadulterated passion and love. He is one of my favorite characters created by Laurell K. Hamilton, and definitely one of my favorite characters of all time. He is so terribly wounded by being neglected by the queen for so long (literally like 100 years) and I am a sucker for the tough on the outside, soft on the inside, hot, hunky, muscley, man-warrior. Laurell brings Doyle to life with beautiful lyrical descriptions that draw you in and make you want him that much more...
Here is one of my favorite(appropriate)Doyle scenes.

Here is one of my favorite(appropriate)Doyle scenes.
The bedroom door opened soundlessly, and as if I’d conjured him by my thoughts, Doyle eased into the room. He shut the door behind him, as soundlessly as he’d opened it. I never understood how he did that. If I’d opened the door, it would have made noise. But when Doyle wanted to, he moved like the fall of night itself, soundless, weighless, undetectable until you realized the light was gone and you were alone in the dark with something you couldn’t see. Doyle was black. Not the black of human skin, but the complete blackness of a midnight sky. He didn’t vanish in a darkened room, because he was darker than the moonlit shadows, just a dark shape gliding toward me. His nickname was the Queen’s Darkness, or simply Darkness. The Queen would say, "Where is my Darkness? Bring me my Darkness," and this meant that soon someone would bleed or die. But now, strangely, the Darkness was mine.
So I definitely searched for like two hours online for a model or actor that even came close to the Doyle in my head...So far no luck...perhaps because the image in my head looks like a mixture of my ex-boyfriend and a WWE fighter... lol...but Taye Diggs comes the closest that I can find. I've always loved Taye since I saw him as Benny in Rent, but I feel like he is a little soft for Doyle. Doyle has had centuries of abuse, battles, and unrequited love wear him down and make him have a lot more edge than Taye can capture..but I still love Mr. Diggs. he's got a fiiinee body with fab muscles...what more can you ask of a mere mortal?
So what do you think? Does anyone know of a Doyle that comes closer? Who's YOUR book boyfriend?
Love Always,
~Andra~
i haven't heard of these books but from the quotes i think i may need to give this series a look!
ReplyDeletei'm like you in the fact that i can never find someone that lives up to the book boyfriend in my head.
great pick :)
I can't bring myself to read her stuff but this does sound pretty good!
ReplyDeleteBest quote ever! I haven't read the book yet but I can see that his honor means a lot to him.
ReplyDeleteI'm not familiar with Fey classifications, but his sounds unique. It makes me sad to hear that his queen neglects him. I'm glad he finds love.
Poor hunky baby. If he needs a shoulder to lean on... ;)
And Taye Diggs! I love him and his amazing smile.
@ allstarme. Yeah Laurell can be a bit...lusty at times and I have given up on her other series. But the Merry Gentry series is less about the sex and more about the power and magic that occurs during/resulting from the sex. I really REALLY love the world that Laurell creates. Yes there is a LOT of sex, but since the premise is that a fairy wants to get preggo...thats kind of expected. Give it a shot. I think that this series (unlike Anita Blake)still has great depth and awesomeness
ReplyDeletewow...I'm speechless. Where is this world and where can I find some Darkness!?!
ReplyDeleteLove that quote and those pick YUM :)
ReplyDeleteGreat quote! I just might have to look a little closer at this guy! lol

Taye Diggs was a nice choice for model here. I haven't read this series, but this post makes me want to! I am a new follower. :)
